iPads to Develop Readers and Build Phonological Awareness

My Students

Our Pre-K babies love getting their hands on things. My Pre-K class is excited about learning new things. I try my best to provide hands-on activities and experiments for my energetic and enthusiastic students. Our classroom is a bright and happy environment to help promote their learning. I love the excitement they have for new experiences. These students are not only learning academics but learning how to be a friend. Each student works extremely hard on a daily basis and give 100%. They have a strong desire for learning new topics and care about the classroom and each other. We do our very best to incorporate a variety of different learning strategies and learning options to ensure that each of the student's needs is​ being met.

I teach in a low-income, high poverty area in Texas.

It is a Title 1 school, meaning more than 95% of the student body comes from a low socioeconomic background. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to experience many real-life adventures. For the majority of my students, Pre-K is their first school experience.

My Project

My students love to use technology and are eager to learn and create when they are given the opportunity to use technology in the classroom. I want to help nurture and grow my students' love of learning by adding iPads to their classroom centers. This will help my students learn skills from all subject areas by allowing them to explore new apps and programs digitally. Using the iPads in classroom centers will allow them to think critically about topics happening in our world. Integrating the iPads into learning centers, the students can use the iPads to read online books, work on learning letters and practicing math skills. There are many programs and apps available on the iPad that are beneficial to my students. Using these programs, my students will be able to learn at their own pace. Students will use the iPads as a learning tool where they can create and share their work with other students.

As educators, we are learning about the possibilities that allow us to appropriately use technology in the classroom to extend learning.

Many of my students do not have access to any technology at home, I would like to open that door in the classroom. I believe that this project will make a difference by putting technology in the hands of these young learners. My goal is to have most of my students reading at grade level. The iPad will assist me with that goal.
