My students need iPad Air 2s for increased accessibility. Many students with learning disabilities are able to better access the curriculum and show their true abilities with speech to text, text to speech, and organization capabilities.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our 5th grade ICT classroom has 22 students with a substantial amount of students receiving special education services. They are a part of the Lower East Side community, one which is vibrant and diverse. Many of our students speak Spanish and come from immigrant families. The majority of our students are living in poverty, and especially need access to technology and quality resources to be successful in school and beyond.

My Project
For many students with learning challenges, reading, writing, and organization can feel almost impossible and disheartening. iPad Air 2s are amazing tools for these students, since so many more tools are at their disposal. The devices have built in speech-to-text capabilities, which allow struggling writers the ability to speak and then edit their text. If editing is a struggle, students can have what they wrote read back to them with text-to-speech!
Our students with disabilities will begin to learn that they can be great students.
Beyond the writing capabilities iPads provide, they also will allow our students to read more challenging texts by following along with read-aloud text. Students can interact with the text, by highlighting it or searching longer texts by keywords. Headphones, keyboards, and cases provide personalization for whatever works best for each child.
Our students do not have the resources available to wealthier families and districts, but they have a right to feel good about themselves as learners. Thank you so much for your support!
