My students need six iPad minis in order to help make practicing reading and math skills easier. They are motivated better when working with technology.
My students range in age from 11 to 13 years old, they are middle school students who function from a Kindergarten level to a 2 or 3rd grade level. They are delayed in both reading and math. Due to their handicapping condition, they need any and all supports to help them accomplish their goals.
A typical day in my room consists of repeating skills.
Skills are introduced on a daily basis with constant repetition. Sometimes some of my students understand what is being instructed but cannot apply the skills learned and/or taught. With the use of technology, some of these skills are easier learned. The variety of apps available help my students learn simple tasks such as Computer Programming, STEM concepts such as math and applied sciences. My students come from the highest poverty level in Brooklyn and cannot afford these technology tools in their home life. Through the school technology cluster, they enjoy using what technology we have and seem to learn more when they are using hands-on learning. I would love to be able to help my students learn and feel that iPads are a wonderful way for them to do this.
My Project
My students would use the iPads to enhance their STEM skills, their math and reading skills. iPads will make instruction to my students easier, they will learn necessary skills in life, such as how to use modern technology. They will also have the opportunity to explore various types of programs / apps that will better suit their academic needs and learning style. I feel my students grasp concepts better when they have animations, sounds, and vivid colors. The iPads are a remarkable tool that is a luxury for our students, one that I would love to have available to them.
This project will also make my students' lives better by exposing them to modern technology that they can not afford in their home lives.
This project will make a difference by allowing my students to feel that they are apart of something larger then a self contained classroom. This project allows for them to be able to communicate to other students, they can feel a connection to others by being able to participate in a conversation about a common theme, instead of wanting to be a part of it.
