My Students

Can you imagine not being able to communicate your thoughts?

I teach in a Chicago Public School with 99% of students receiving free breakfast and lunch.

There are roughly 730 students that attend my school with about 12% being diverse learners . My students have many different disability types ranging from ADHD to severe intellectual disabilities. They are in 3rd and 4th grade and most of my students are English Language Learners.

My Project

Most of us take speaking for granted. Being able to ask a friend how their weekend was, for help with a math question, or even to ask to use the bathroom, all become impossible tasks when you have no means of communicating. IPADs are an amazing tool to help out students of all types, but especially for those who need a mode of communication. There are many apps that are specifically made for helping people communicate. Unfortunately, there will not be funds to purchase more updated IPADs until next year, and the ones we have now are the first ones made, so they just do not work like they used to. I have three students that will benefit from having their own assigned IPAD that is tailored to their needs. IPADs are small and light weight, so it is easy for my students to carry around the school. The communication apps allow my students to have a speaking board with them at all times, so they can participate in every day school activities like everyone else.

This project will improve not only my students academic skills, but also their social skills, which will then allow them to develop friendships and a love for learning.

Seeing my students get frustrated because they are not able to verbalize their thoughts makes me as a teacher frustrated as well, because I am not able to provide them with what they need to communicate.
