iPads: Learning Individualized

My Students

I have the privilege of working with awesome students who happen to have autism! My 3rd-5th grade students are individuals who love school and are a joy to work with. Every small step in their growth is wholly embraced and celebrated in my classroom! In my 15 years of teaching I've never had a more fulfilling position and that's thanks to our students and the staff I work with.

Our program for students with autism is growing in numbers and in quality.

Apparently we have become the talk of the autism community in our school district and we take great pride in such an accolade. As I move into my 3rd year with our students I look forward to working with each of them and their families. I can only imagine the growth they will make and can't wait to be a part of that journey.

My Project

Our classroom is an individualized learning experience for our students with autism. Most of our learning is done in groups of 2-3 students and one staff member. Each student has an individual education plan, or IEP. The IEP is designed around each students' strengths and areas for growth. One of our greatest tools for helping many students either master their goals, or have a strong motivation to work hard on those goals, is the experience of using an iPad. When other methods of teaching or options for motivation don't work, the iPad is very effective. I have a goal of allowing each student to have their own device. Why you might ask? If I can have an iPad for each student, then their device can be as individualized as their IEP(and the covers will protect the iPad's from drops). This will allow us to put just the apps that are appropriate for that student, based on his/her IEP goals and his/her likes, on that device. It also allows us to ensure that whatever the student does on that iPad is appropriate for his/her developmental level. I can't think of a better way to provide individualized learning!
