My Students
Children with autism spectrum disorders have difficulty with language and communication, as well as socialization skills. They are often visual learners who are highly motivated by, interested in, and adept with technology.
My students range in age from 4 to 14 years old and attend a special education program for students with developmental disabilities.
All of the students are diagnosed with autism and display significant challenges with a variety of developmental skills. In general, they require special instruction in language and communication, as well as social skills. They learn best in structured, multi-sensory, and reinforcing activities with a variety of instructional and environmental supports.
My Project
The Apple iPad presents an amazing and versatile resource for students with autism. It connects to the school's wireless Internet account, allowing students to access information, videos, and other resources immediately. Apps can be downloaded (some tailored specifically for students with autism) and used in ABA instruction, as visual cues, or even as a form of augmentative/alternate communication. It can play videos used in video-modeling social skills training, yoga and Tai chi instruction, sign language tutorials, and countless other highly reinforcing educational activities.
Two iPads would be shared by over 60 students with autism.
They would be used predominantly by the school's autism coach, social skills teacher, and speech and language pathologists. They would be incorporated into instruction and as a programmatic support for activities involving communication and socialization. They will also be incorporated into the school's positive behavior support system by providing a motivator for students in the school.
