My Students

This year I have really been trying to focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) in the classroom in order to create a fun, hands-on, unforgettable learning experience for second grade students. We are having some trouble with the technology aspect of our STEM projects.

We are a charter school with 67% free or reduced lunch.

Since we are a charter, we are a community within a school. Many of our students travel up to two hours a day to attend our school. Our families often make this sacrifice so that their children don't have to attend the local, rural school within their own community. We are an arts and sciences charter school right next to the entrance to a national park. We have a strong relationship with the national park which gives us access to many learning field trips that are easily accessible. Many of our families are employed in the park and support our learning that takes place there. We are a small school where the students often "grow up together", being in the same class together from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Most of our teachers and staff have been with us for a long time and the connection with our families is strong.

My Project

I can't think of a more exciting and engaging way to bring the technology aspect of STEM into our classroom than through having the use of iPads in the classroom! My students will be able to work independently by using internet resources, web quests that have been set up by the teacher for research, and educational apps that pertain to the project at hand. iPads are very user-friendly and appeal heavily to the tactile and visual learners in the classroom. If we are doing a project on buoyancy students will be able to research boat hull designs. If we are doing a project on bridge building, students will be able to observe different bridge styles across the globe. Another exciting aspect of having iPads in the classroom is the ability for the students to record their work. They will be able to shoot video of their findings, which will become evidence of their learning. We can then post this on to our blog to share with our families.

Any donations toward this project will help make a difference in our classroom by giving our students the opportunity to work on their STEM projects without unnecessary frustration.

The computers we have access to are overloaded and outdated, frequently losing student work in progress. We will be able to do our work in the classroom, differentiating as we go, without having to all leave to go find working computers in a different room. We are grateful for any donations and support!
