My Students

Music brings a classroom alive in a way that few activities can. I teach in a 3K-5, public elementary school with a diverse population of about twelve hundred students. My students are generally of low socio-economic status, immigrant families from all corners of the globe. The ability to participate in a music ensemble, to play an instrument or sing, is a unique opportunity for many of these students.

I have seen music not only enrich their lives, but also give those who may not excel in other areas a chance to shine.

This is why, when we live in a world where music is often the first on the fiscal chopping block, it is so important to keep such opportunities alive for our children.

My Project

The current technology level of my classroom consists of one laptop, one iPad and a SMART board. Because our resources are limited, thirty students will have to share one device with the teacher. It is limiting, to say the least!

These iPads will stretch my music classroom beyond its four walls into a globally dynamic adventure, where over six hundred students will be able to partner with each other to embrace creating music without fear or worry about their level of ability.

We will use our iPads as tools to play live music, using apps that allow us to play an instrument with the tap of a finger. We will explore composition by collaborating on songs and capturing them in Garage Band. We will have the ability to collaborate with students around the world. We will be able to electronically respond to teacher prompts, which is both fun for students and an easy way for the teacher to assess progress. Adding iPads to our music classroom will allow struggling students to join the band, composers to capture their work and the teacher to create interactive music lessons on the SMART board.
