Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergarten students are creative, energetic, and so eager to learn!
In our class, about 30% of the students are from military families and about 50% of our students come from underprivileged neighborhoods.
We have a very diverse and ever-changing population, and students are reading at a variety of levels. With your help, my students will have many more opportunities to read at their instructional reading level so they can continue to grow and be ready for any school setting.
My Project
We have an exciting opportunity to bring an iPad-based reading system into our classroom to boost children’s reading skills. Unlike many iPad activities where children are one-on-one with a tablet, with this system children read with a buddy and share in the work of decoding words. They learn together rather than in isolation. The system dovetails with our Tools of the Mind curriculum which is designed to build children’s executive function skills and emphasizes playful learning and building a community of learners.
The reading program, called PowerTools, lets children read original, engaging, science-based stories.
Each story is written at multiple reading levels so there’s one for every learner in my classroom. The stories are closely integrated with wider science themes and concepts, so they develop their scientific understanding while learning to read.
Children receive continuous reading support through an interactive “Toolbox” that guides them in identifying the best decoding strategies when they need help. Studies show the average beginning reader spends only 6 minutes/day reading, and struggling readers rarely spend >1 minute. Children in Power Tools pilot studies tripled the time they spent engaged in supported reading practice. The PowerTools system also captures and analyzes data on my students’ reading development. I can quickly access a summary of the word patterns and sight words my students need to practice more, how well they are comprehending text, and how fluently they are reading. I can personalize instruction for each learner with ease and specificity. I can even send readers personalized messages with suggestions for stories/skills to focus on. I’m so excited about integrating this into my classroom.
Four iPads will triple the amount of supported reading time for every child in my classroom. Please help me give my students the gift of reading and a strong foundation of science knowledge!
