My Students
My classroom is an engaging, structured, beautiful, intellectually stimulating environment. My first-graders show so much growth during the short time I have them. First-grade is a very rewarding grade to teach!
My students are a mix of regular education and special needs students.
I am the mainstreaming teacher for our first-grade ABA classroom. These students are on the autism spectrum, and come to my class to build the skills necessary to join a traditional classroom setting full-time. My first-graders are so supportive of all their classmates, and especially of the ABA mainstreaming students. I love seeing empathy develop in the children. I also love seeing the positive influence of my regular education students onto the ABA students. Besides having a class full of first-graders, we have two classroom guinea pigs. These two foster respect, responsibility, and compassion in all of my students. Plus, they make us laugh!
My Project
I would love an iPad to add to our weekly center rotation. My students rotate through 10 centers a week, which means I have to create 10 different centers each week. I would like to start an iPad center. I will be donating my own iPad to the classroom and that is why I need the extra iPad case. I know an iPad center would really appeal to all my students. I also plan on using the iPads for behavior reinforcement. The possibilities are endless. I have attended numerous conferences and courses on iPads in the classroom, only to go back to my classroom without the ability to implement what I learned. I would love to open my classroom to this new teaching platform!
I think it is important to prepare our students for the technology of today.
I know that for many of my students, this will be their only exposure to an iPad. I also think an iPad will make a great motivator and an equalizer for my students. My ABA students excel at technology, and I would love for them to turn-key, and teach my regular education students about iPads. I think this would help boost their self-confidence and social skills!
