My Students

There is no 'typical day' in my classroom because I aim to make each day different. I adapt my lessons and sequence according to the needs of the students, while incorporating Technology and current events along with traditional texts to engage my students. I love my school and I love my students, But technology is upgrading fast and the old stuff just wont work anymore.

I am a committed teacher that is willing to work hard to be a great teacher; however, I cannot do it alone.

We are a Title I School where the students receive free breakfast and lunch. 99% of my students are African American and come from many diverse backgrounds including English Language Learners, military families, and families with low incomes. These factors don't phase them; I see each and every one of them working to get the most out of the classroom. Despite significant challenges, they work head to meet the standards set forth by the Baltimore City School District. Tablets and the Common Core State Standards are causing a paradigm shift in education. Unfortunately, due to the digital divide, technology that our most disadvantaged students cannot participate, which widens the existing achievement gap.

My Project

In our district we have many online web based learning tools for our students to further their learning. The schools student population has grown vastly with the district continuing to close schools and increasing classroom sizes. Unfortunately with the program updates we need to upgrade our iPads to ones that run iOS 10 or higher for them to run the programs that have also updated. In my class we depend on this kind of technology to teach the content, because the system and schools do not have the funds to purchase textbooks and resources to keep the learning in the 21st century.

We use our class website www.mrpsocialstudies.com to break the traditional time constraints of the traditional classroom.

We as teachers watch these valuable tools become unusable. Through this project students will further develop skills that I didn't have the chance to gain until college. Having a digital class webpage for my students so that they can access their book, worksheets, and projects by also reminding them of upcoming events builds responsibility. They have everything at their finger tips to be successful, but we can't take full advantage of the site in the class as they would at home because of the limits to digital tablets to view the content on. I want all our students to be able to have access in class so that they can bridge the digital divide and utilize all the resources that are available, while cutting down on copies that can be better for the environment. Who’s going to help me?
