My Students

I teach a diverse group of students in a primary life skills classroom from a small rural area in Northwestern Pennsylvania. My students have disabilities ranging from autism to fragile X syndrome to intellectual disabilities. Several of my students have limited to no verbal communication skills.

However, you need to see my students for their abilities and not their disabilities.

Each and every one of these kiddos have unique personalities that make our classroom a wonderful place to be! My students are caring, genuine, enthusiastic, determined, and innovative. I have readers, artists, mathematicians, singers, dancers, and athletes in my classroom, just to name a few.

These students have a heart of gold with so much to offer. I never know what my day will hold, but I do know that they will teach me something by the end of it. Watch out world because they are about to change it!

My Project

I have 10 students in my classroom who are motivated to learn through the means of technology. Currently, we have five iPads in our classroom that are used for independent skill practice and reinforcement of previously taught concepts.

My goal is to get enough iPads so each student has their own.

If each student were able to get their own iPad their learning would increase tremendously. Right now, we have to set a timer and take turns on the iPads. With each student having their own, they would be able to engage in more practice activities and games for longer amounts of time. In turn, this would lead to a higher retention rate on necessary life skills and an increase in independence. I would also be able to incorporate more one on one instruction into my day to help the students reach their IEP goals.
