I have the extraordinary honor of getting to teach Literacy to the almost 1,200 students in my K-5 school. As the Literacy teacher for every student, it is imperative that I find a way to reach every students different learning needs.
My school is one of the largest, if not the largest, K-5 school in my state.
With close to 1,200 Kindergarten through fifth graders, every day is an adventure. We have over forty different languages and dialects of languages spoken at our school. Many of the students in our school are first and second generation Americans, so learning to read and write is extremely important.
My Project
iPad technology in the classroom can be a powerful tool for learning and comprehension. The interactivity it provides can make for a very engaging experience, definitely for elementary school aged students. Being in a school with over forty different languages, iPads can make a world of a difference in how a child learns English. Learning will be a tactile, tangible interaction because an ELL student will be touching the actual information as opposed to a keyboard or other input method. Additionally, from a classroom environment standpoint, the immediacy of information in a non-threatening, non-disruptive manner is key in comprehension for ELL students. This style of learning is also key for students with learning disabilities.
Donating to this project will greatly improve my Literacy classroom in so many different ways.
Mainly, it'll assist the ELL population in my school tremendously. There are many apps that are available for download that are elementary student friendly and ELL friendly. Learning will be a tactile, tangible interaction and will not only benefit ELL students, but students with every learning modality.
