Our school has a large number of students who speak two languages and many students who receive free or reduced lunch. This diverse setting makes for an amazing learning environment; each student brings strengths to our class.
As a Second Grade teacher, with so many students at various levels of English Language skills, I am always looking for more ways to meet all of my students' needs effectively.
I want my students to feel that they are all receiving the attention that they need and desire.
Even with a small class of 17 students this year, I am constantly looking for new ways to keep my students engaged in the learning that they need. I am not only looking for ways to support my struggling students, but, also, constantly searching for more effective ways to make sure that my more advanced students are challenged as well.
My Project
With iPads in the classroom, I will be able to let my students do more work with technology. These iPads can be used for any subject matter. They are very helpful for math centers; students can use them for Khan Academy and other math games during an independent center. During my literacy centers, I like to have a listening center where my students can listen to our focus text. iPads would greatly support this center. With so many EL students, using the iPads can be a great way to differentiate and give each student exactly what they need.
The iPads can also help my students learn how to be researchers!
We do a few projects throughout the year in which students use the internet to learn more about a certain subject (such as penguins). With the few computers that I have in my classroom, it is difficult for students to get enough time online.
With our world relying more and more on technology, I believe that it is so important to teach students about how some of that works and to get them thinking about technology as a tool instead of just for fun. I would love to use these iPads to teach my students some simple coding. It would be an amazing way to get my students interested in something they may have never thought of before. These iPads could make a huge difference in supporting this goal.
