How would you feel sitting in a classroom after relocating to Spokane, Washington where most of your class speaks a language you don't know? That is the challenge that my English Language Learners (ELLs) face each and every day!
My students are kind-hearted, brave and determined to learn English so they can be successful in their new lives in the USA.
They are all learning English though some already speak multiple languages. My 60 plus students each have their own stories of what brought them to leave their home country. Many of them are refugees from countries like Iraq, Sudan, and Burma (Myanmar) and others have immigrated from Russia, Mexico, Vietnam and the Marshall Islands. They all attend our school in a high poverty area and many students do not have access to technology in their homes. In today's times they need both English proficiency and technology skills in their future endeavors.
My Project
It is my hope that you can help me provide an iPad and Otterbox case for English language learning. With this piece of technology I see the kids practicing their reading, writing, listening and speaking in a new and engaging way. There are so many apps out there where the students can record and monitor their own progress while setting goals to challenge themselves to the next level of language proficiency. Looking at the diversity of my students, I also know that there are apps that can meet each one at the exact level they need to work on---from foundational handwriting and letter recognition to reading fluency, comprehension as well as basic grammar through narrative writing.
This iPad would get used by my students in small group settings as well as in the general education classroom where the ELL students often sit unsure how to complete assignments.
It would truly bring a smile to so many faces as they learn English and technology at the same time. It will provide an opportunity for success for each of my ELL students no matter where they came from, what language they speak at home or how much English they have learned. With your help we can make a difference!
