Were you one of those students that had trouble with math? Maybe you just didn't enjoy it or you just got bored with the same old worksheets day after day after day. My class of special education students would benefit from using technology to become engaged and work together cooperatively.
Students in my classroom are part of a lower economic community.
Many students come from a nearby Native American reservation. Most of the students take advantage of the free or reduced breakfast and lunch program. Their families are struggling financially and sometimes lack things such as books and supplies that their children need to succeed. Additionally, my students are part of the special education program. The all have a learning disability which impacts their abilities in reading writing and math. They are all completely capable of succeeding in school and going on to college one day, but they just need to be taught in a different way than their general education peers.
My Project
I am requesting iPads for my cooperative learning groups in my special education math classes. I am looking to use the device with my Mimio Interactive board to allow my students work in groups on a problems and have each group's work displayed on the board. Students will be so engaged in the task and will be able to work out problems without the fear of standing at the board. The iPads will also be used to engage students in math task in centers with the many wonderful math apps that are available now.
This project could really change a lot for my students.
By engaging them more with technology, they will develop a love for learning, which is really the greatest gift anyone could give a child.
