it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." ~ Anne Frank. My students are a tech-savvy group of curious fourth graders. They are digital natives! They live in an age of 'selfies' and, no doubt, know the power of an image.
My students attend a Title I prekindergarten to grade 5 elementary school in New York City.
Our school is located in the South Bronx - the poorest congressional district in the nation. Most, if not all, of my students reside in nearby public housing and qualify for free lunch.
My Project
Currently, I am working with a group of fourth grade students who are completing a unit on Anne Frank. If you haven't read her diary, you have probably heard of the poignant and sometimes heart wrenching story of this Jewish girl who goes into hiding during World War II to avoid the Nazis. This project will enable students to read her diary and use the iPads to take a VIRTUAL TOUR of the online Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam!!! This project integrates elements of STEAM education with history. This museum tour will enable them to see where Anne hid and wrote her diary. After reading her story and a "visit" to the museum, they will be able to collaborate in teams and use iMovie, Story Buddy or other storytelling apps to digitally retell Anne's story in a visual way that includes photos, captions, video clips, and images they can grab from the Internet. The headphones (with mics) will enable them to add narration to create visual masterpieces worthy of a mini Oscar.

Just imagine the tons of other projects that will improve student outcomes and increase engagement. Just imagine students applying the skills they learn in this project to literacy, math or even science by creating a project that explains and describes the water cycle. Digital storytelling, no doubt, is a hands-on way of empowering students through the arts!
