This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Think of the fact that a deaf person cannot hear.
Then, what deafness may we not all possess? What senses
do we lack that we cannot see and cannot hear another world all around us?" Frank Herbert.
Located in one of the many wards of Houston, next to a homeless shelter, between the crumbling buildings, jagged streets, and vacant homes, my school can be found.
My school is that of a Title I school serving some of lowest socio-economic students in Houston. My students are deaf and hard of hearing, utilizing hearing aids and cochlear implants to access the curriculum as their hearing peers do. My students are in pre-kindergarten, though some functioning on a 2 year old level, with various educational needs.
My Project
Due to their hearing impairments, all of my students are delayed both in oral language as well as academically. Though 3 to 5 years of age, most function one year to two years below that. The goal at the end of every year is to make 2 years growth within one years time to try and close the ever growing gap between my students and their typical hearing peers. My students require one to one intervention every day within a special education setting. Many resources within my school are limited, thus making it seemingly impossible for my students to utilize technology within their special education setting. Funding iPads would help bring hands on learning directly to my students. My deaf and hard of hearing students would be able to gain access to technology and learning unlike ever before. My students would be able to focus on speech production, vocabulary, and foundational academics such as the alphabet and counting. My students would be able to practice academics in an exciting way!
Donations to this project will change of the course of education and intervention for my deaf and hard of hearing students.
My students will have an opportunity to utilize technology in the advancement of their learning. My deaf and hard of hearing students are delayed in all areas. The majority of my students are unable to communicate orally, and are often unintelligible. Please help my students by providing them with the same experiences as their typical hearing peers.
