My Students

My classroom serves students with autism, cognitive impairment, and severe multiple impairment. They are an adorable, energetic, sweet, sassy group of kids that you can’t help but fall in love with upon meeting them! They work very hard every day to increase communication (as most are nonverbal), improve social skills, and learn functional academics through a modified curriculum. Each and every one of them plays an important role in our room to make our room so special - from the class clown, the caretaker, the teacher’s helper - it’s a very unique group that you can’t help but love! They deserve so much; thank you for taking the time to read about just how special they are and possibly being a part of their journey. WE appreciate you!

My Project

My students are unable to manipulate a mouse or use a keyboard on a computer, so touch-screen tablets are their only means to use technology. We currently have one iPad in our classroom, but with twelve students, it is difficult to share. We regularly do centers as part of our instruction and having the ability to have an iPad at each center would be tremendous. I could demonstrate the skill being taught or worked on through videos, and then students could practice those skills through a variety of educational apps. The iPads could also serve as communication tools during lessons and circle times for students who are nonverbal.
