This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the privilege to teach second grade at a diverse charter school in Las Vegas. My school serves a low-income population in which most students are English Language Learners. These students make up a large percentage of my second grade class. A portion of these students only receive exposure to English here in the school. They work with great enthusiasm and effort to improve their English and progress toward a mastery of the language.
I teach at a Title I school in Nevada in which a high percentage of my students come from bilingual homes and receive free or reduced-price lunch.
My students face tough obstacles in their lives but arrive at school smiling and ready to learn. They love their teachers and they adore their principal. Our school truly is a community and a family. We each do our part as student and teacher work side by side with one mission in mind: our students’ success. Each classroom in our school has their college graduation date written on the board. We help the students set their goals high and we strive to help them achieve those goals.
My Project
At our school, we believe strongly in our blended learning programs. What this means is that students are expected to graduate certain computer-based programs, such as Accelerated Reader, ST Math, and iReady. The best thing about it is that my students absolutely love working on these computer programs. My favorite part is watching their eyes light up with excitement when they fill up their flower on their Accelerated Reader or when they pass a challenge on ST Math. They are programs that these children genuinely love and enjoy learning with.
As their teacher, I feel it is my responsibility to ensure that they are provided with the necessary resources they need in order to further expand their knowledge.
Each teacher is given four laptops to work with throughout the day. This makes it very difficult to be able to provide my students with access to their blended learning throughout the day. With these iPads, I will be able to provide my students with more sources of technology that will help lead them towards a more meaningful education.
