Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach students with autism who are in sixth grade. This is the first year of a classroom and still requires resources for it to be a more inviting and functional learning community. I love working with these students because they have their own unique personality that is special to the world. Our group of kids love to listen to music, to lounge and play with some sensory toys, watch videos, and they even participate in growing a garden outside. It is awesome to see how much joy a child can show each day.

We celebrate the small wins, something that may seem insignificant such as learning how to tie your shoe is a victory in our classroom.

In our classroom, we try to be as functional as we can in terms of what we learn so that it will benefit the students when they become older. We do learn about math and English, but we also try to incorporate how to be a functioning member of a community with social skills lessons. Honestly, these kids make coming to work every day a joy!

My Project

The two iPads that I am requesting will go a long way in providing the assistive technology that my students need to access curriculum. For example, there are students in my classroom who are partially verbal and it would be amazing for them to practice on applications where they can request their needs via the iPad.

There are a number of applications that provide students an opportunity to listen to a book electronically, provide speech to text or just have value to reinforce different educational concepts.

For us these iPads will go a long way in improving the students’ education.
