Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Technology not only leads to heightened engagement in the classroom but also the ability to differentiate instruction instantly. I am helping to instill 21st century skills in all of my students on a daily basis.
My students are eager, worthy, and inspiring.
They are also tired, hungry, and frustrated because of some of the living situations they reside within. Many are the caretakers in their homes. Many are amazing athletes but don't have the funds or time away from home to participate. At school they are safe, they are listened to, they are accountable. My 6th graders are young adults trying to balance childhood and the demands of adulthood. Many of my students struggle with communicating effectively and respectfully. Classroom engagement is key to helping students stay focused and on task.
Our school has a free and reduced-price lunch rate of over 90%. Our students struggle getting to school each day on time. The resources are not always abundant, but we make the best of what we have. I want to provide my students with the same opportunities that well funded schools provide. The teachers in our building provide the safety, routine, and accountability that young learners crave.
My Project
The use of technology is integrated into all subjects in my classroom daily. My students use Chromebooks for ELA, but many of our math programs tie directly into apps on the iPad. I can help low level learners by differentiating instruction on the iPad or connecting to e-lessons within our math curriculum. We also have the ability to research and crosscheck information within sources immediately, create projects, and increase learning through the use of educational apps.
Many apps and tools can be used within my cooperative learner groups to make use of online math tools and connect with our math textbook on-line daily. I can also use the technology for 1-on - instruction in math and reading by differentiating instruction for low level learners. During Daily 3 my low level readers can be engaged through the use of the iPad if books are read to them or if they are reading along with the text. Besides fiction I also incorporate informational text into Daily 3 readings and responses.
Technology increases engagement in the classroom.
My students understand that they have information at the tips of their fingers, but crosschecking and determining reliability of information is crucial. These important skills and tools are only learned through the use of technology. Our testing has become computer based and the skills necessary to become a good test taker must be learned on high quality up-to-date technology. Learning 21st century skills requires the use of 21st century technology.
