My Students
This September I accepted my first official teaching position as a Special Education Kindergarten teacher! My students come from diverse households in NYC and attend a self-contained classroom in a year-round specialized school for students of varying special educational supports. Most of my students are nonverbal and use PECS and assistive technology to communicate.
"If they can't learn the way you teach, then we teach the way they learn".
Attending school in an urban setting my students are often the last to receive any technology in the classroom. Since the beginning of the school year, my students have demonstrated immediate excitement when given the opportunity to use technology in the classroom and are motivated to develop their language skills when interacting with it.
My Project
Learning math concepts can be challenging for any students, especially, for students who rely heavily on visual learning and have difficulty maintaining focus for extended periods of time. With the use of iPad's and technology, I have seen my students, who demonstrate those struggles as well as others, retain math concepts that they often struggle with.
With the use of technology in the classroom, my students can engage in interactive math games and videos to extend their knowledge base.
By implementing iPad's in the classroom students can practice key skills such as number recognition, sorting, and addition in a way that doesn't distract other students throughout the day and focus' on their strengths rather than their struggles.
