Motivation is key in education. Technology seems to be a requirement these days to get kids engaged to learn, so why not meet them where they are? These iPads will encourage, motivate, and teach!
My students are energetic kiddos with good hearts.
Many of them lack opportunities due to economic situations at home, or even lack of support. What we do in the classroom for 7 hours a day is crucial, because for some, this is where they get all of their schooling. They have a passion for learning but sometimes not all of the tools. My school itself is a Title I (low income) school with the majority of students receiving free and reduced lunch located outside of a major metropolitan area.
My class is center-based. I will use the iPads for both reading and math stations. One of the most challenging parts of teaching is customizing learning for every individual student. This is especially true in reading. The iPads will be used to help students work on reading on their particular level using a variety of different apps. This is also an engaging way to get students to read. Additionally, in math, there are incredible apps for basic math facts which students come in from the summer slump not remembering. One of the coolest things I've seen is students using the "Show Me" app to explain a math problem while they are solving it. It's recorded and can be shown again and again. These are just a few of the ways I'll use the pads in the room!
Keeping up with technology and student needs is difficult, but it can be done.
I'm excited to have two iPads in the room to help with student engagement and learning. My kids are ALWAYS excited about using new technology, and having a plan to use it in effective ways is going to increase their learning in math and reading. Help my kiddos learn in a 21st century classroom!
