I teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to 40 students (K-8) in Camden, NJ in a high poverty and high crime area. In spite of the challenging environment, my students always come to school with great attitudes, always eager to learn. My students come from all over Latin America, including Mexico, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. The majority of my students do not have technology at home and most of the parents do not speak English. They love any opportunity to use assistive technology or do hands on activities in the classroom. They are so grateful for what they have and would never think to ask for more. I want to make sure my amazing students have every opportunity their peers across the state have!
My Project
I am requesting an iPad for my ESL students to help them improve their English skills. There are so many incredible apps that allow the students to develop vocabulary, improve their literacy skills, and give them a chance to practice their reading and writing, all in a fun and engaging way. I'd love to work with my students using Brainpop ESL, Futaba, SpellingCity, and many more wonderful apps. The iPad would also aid me in data collection so I can track student growth and target challenging areas.
My students vary in language proficiency; some students have been in this country for only weeks, while others are nearly fluent.
Sometimes I have groups with completely different language needs. With the iPad, I can give a student level-appropriate tasks while simultaneously focusing on other students.
As an ESL teacher, I must find fun and creative ways to allow my students to access the educational material across disciplines. With the iPad, they will be able to develop their academic vocabulary and content-specific vocabulary in math, science, social studies, and ELA. Please help support my wonderful students so they can improve their English and reach their full potential!
