This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Some of you, I'm sure, remember a time without computers, without iPhones, and without, dare I say, iPods. Some of my students are still living in that era.
I teach curious little second graders in an impoverished area of Los Angeles.
All of them receive free breakfast and lunch. Unfortunately for some, these are the only meals they receive on a typical day. Most households are single income. These circumstances leave very little room for "wants".
My Project
Our classroom is equipped with 3 desktop computers that are about 10 years old. They take about 10 minutes to power up, if we're lucky. Once they are on, it takes another five minutes to start Word and finally start typing. Once my students finish their writing we are ready to print. Oh wait! Nope we have no printer so we have to email the document to my email so that I can open it up in the computer lab, that we get to visit about 1-2 a month, and finally print. All this just to publish one child's writing... Now multiply that times 24. I would like an iPad for my classroom for several reasons: we will be able to type, create slideshows, take pictures, it's wireless and can access the Internet. With this technology, each child can publish their writing, write reports, and even create slideshows. The accompanying printer will enable them to publish more often and not have to wait a week or two to see their finished product and share it with their peers and parents.
My students are from this technological era yet have very little access to technology of the 21st century.
These products will help them begin to prepare themselves for real life. We are in an era where it is required that you have computer skills in any job/career. Help me nudge my students into the 21st century and have more access to their published work. I can only imagine the awesome creations that will come of having an iPad and printer. Thanks.
