Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are smart, funny, and hard working, and we had lots of fun learning while school was in session. Because of COVID 19 school closures, we abruptly switched to distance learning, and it's been an uphill journey for me and my students trying to figure out new online platforms, transitioning to online conferences and switching in-person learning to a virtual mode.

It's been very tough on the students who no longer have access to their teachers working with them in person, responding to their needs, and providing help on demand.

Unfortunately, many of them can't count on family support with their schoolwork due to circumstances beyond their control. Not being able to provide the instruction that meets my students' specific needs and not being able to provide timely feedback is something that I would like to change for the coming school year.

My Project

When COVID 19 closed our schools, I've had to resort to online lessons. Though there are countless resources out there, one thing that I wasn't able to find a replacement for is my own personal teaching. As a science teacher, normally I would structure a learning environment where I could explain a new lesson, show how to problem solve, demonstrate the thought process of a new concept, and at the same time check for my students' understanding, provide feedback and adjust the rigor of my instruction based on their responses. This is nearly impossible to do without a tool that allows my students to see what I write. Though they continued to work hard and make the best of the circumstances, my students expressed that what they missed most was being instructed by me, their own teacher. The majority of my students don't get any academic support at home, and accessing and processing information online without me is tough and impersonal for them. I, too, missed interacting with my students and being there to guide their learning.

Having an iPad Pro tablet is as close as I can get to being in front of my students and teaching a lesson for everyone to see.

When it's connected to my laptop, my students can see whatever I write or draw on the tablet. It actually goes a step further, by allowing me to save my notes and to make them available to students who are absent. With an iPad Pro, I can also annotate on any digital media that I share with students. This tool will make my teaching more interactive, and therefore, help students feel more engaged and connected.
