Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As of March 17th, my students will be learning at home. School will be closed due to the COVID-19 virus for the rest of the school year. This presents a challenge, for my students and me. Our school is a Title I school, which speaks to the degree of my student's poverty, where over 85% of my students have free or reduced lunch, and where many of my students traditionally do not have access to technology, once they leave our school.
As a teacher in a high poverty, largely Latino, public urban school, I have the added challenge of developing and fostering a high learning environment in my classes with students who may have been conditioned to believe that they can't achievement because of our community's poverty.
My Project
While we've been in quarantine and having distance learning, my students have borrowed laptop computers from our school district to learn. I, myself, have one district-owned computer to teach my students.
How often do you use your iPhone?
Your iPad? A computer? My AMAZING, creative, and inquisitive students deserve more!I am requesting an Ipad with two uses in mind-my students and myself. Currently, as I am teaching using my borrowed laptop, and am unable to prepare other activities, etc. Since I am sharing my screen during our virtual sessions for students to learn/read, I am unable to do multiple functions on the laptop. I am requesting an iPad so that I am able to do multiple tasks such as taking roll, sending worksheets, posting assignments on our learning platforms.
Since our virtual time is so limited, I want to adhere to all my students' needs as fast as possible and the Ipad will greatly facilitate this daunting task. After our distance learning is over, I plan on checking out the Ipad to my students so that they can read digital books independently. I've started a hardbound book Chicano library in my classroom (through previous DonorsChoose requests). In the future, I hope to expand this library and also request other iPads to further my student's literacy, and creativity. Thank you for your consideration.
