This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kindergarten has changed a lot over the years, luckily so has technology! I cannot wait to use these iPads to introduce a whole new way of learning to my students!

I love Denker Ave.

Elementary! It is located in south Los Angeles and currently educates close to 900 students, most of which are on free or reduced lunch. My 11th year of teaching began just about a month ago and it has been a whirlwind. I was meant to teache 5th grade, I was very excited and ready, but surprised at the last minute I was moved to a transition kinder (TK)/kindergarten split! If I am being honest, I was not pleased about this move. I love kindergarten, but the last minute move was very stressful. But after the initial shock and first few days were over, I found myself calm and content because these kids are great! Teaching TK and kinder kids is very challenging, but we are making it work. My 24 students range in age from 4-6 and include kids that were in TK last year and kids that have never been in school! As different as these kids are, they share one thing, they LOVE school! Every book I read them, song we sing, skill they learn brings such excitement.

My Project

Just today I attended a great training. The best part of the training was learning about all the amazing apps that are available through credible education companies. I would really like to expose my students to these apps and I need technology to that! These apps are available in the iTunes app store and include interactive leveled reading programs, programs that allow students to speak into the iPad and listen to their blending/reading back, some of the apps even encourage team work with more than one student working on an iPad at the same time. My classroom has NO computers (with the exception of my Donor's Choose laptop). The school has a class set of iPads, but they can only be used for standardized testing. So as great as the training was, it was equally pointless with my lack of technology!

Having these 6 iPad Mini's will provide my students with a chance to practice the new skills they are learning through the use technology.

With 6 iPads, my small groups will be able to work independently with their own iPad daily. The iPads will give new meaning to IWT (independent work time) in my classroom, it will be much more meaningful than a pencil and paper activity.
