iPad Keyboards

My students need to become proficient in technology. With iPads, they develop 21st century tech skills. These 40 keyboards will help ensure that they also learn the basics. They, too, can become proficient typists--no more thumb-typing!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

TECH, TECH, TECH! Four years ago, my district adopted a 1:1 iPad program, revolutionizing my teaching. Gone are the pencils, pens, the endless copies, and illegible handwriting! Students are developing tech skills, working in groups to demonstrate higher levels of content proficiency.

Despite preconceptions of many adults, my kids require explicit instruction on its academic use as well as support as they explore.

Technology is the initial hook in engaging students, and they learn to use it beyond the fun applications, to demonstrate their learning to an audience greater than their teacher. My kids leave me with heads held high- they are confident not only in their critical thinking skills, but also in their ability to create solid, authentic products to demonstrate their learning.

My Project

My students need 40 iPad keyboards to learn to type properly. A common pet peeve among teachers is that while students are developing higher level tech skills, they are missing out on the basics. They do not know how to type! Since they cannot feel the keyboard on the iPads, and the alphanumeric placement differs from a standard keyboard, students either "hunt and peck" or use only their thumbs, as if using a cell phone. I want to provide students with the daily practice of typing so that they develop a more complete tech learning experience.

Typing skills are not magic!

Students are easily impressed. When they see me type without looking, they react as if I have magical powers! "How does she know what she's typing?"

I want to instill confidence in my students. This skill is easily learned and can be well-developed, especially since they have technology readily accessible. They, too, can be typing magicians!
