Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have been an Autistic Support Teacher for the past 12 years. I am in my first year teaching in my school district, which is a predominantly urban school district with few resources. I have 8 students in my classroom who are all on the Autism Spectrum. My students come from various backgrounds, most from homes with Spanish speaking families. The students in my class are full time except for going out to elective classes, lunch and recess. The majority of our day is spent working on them requesting, vocalizing and demonstrating appropriate play and social skills.
My Project
Utilization of iPads in an Autistic Support classroom enhances and supports therapy. There are many academic and functional areas that can be addressed when using an iPad. These areas can include improvement in scheduling, motivation systems, academic skills, communication, video modeling, data collection, and leisure activities. One of the most significant benefits of using the iPad for students with ASD, is the benefit of teaching social skills in a systematic manner. Since students with ASD do not typically acquire social skills by observation alone (Myles, Simpson, Ormsbee, & Erikson,1993), targeting skills with relevant, skills-based apps can be beneficial.
In our school we currently run an ABA program to help facilitate language and communication with our students.
In the recent National Standards Project completed by the National Autism Center (2009), the majority of strategies with a strong evidence base are found with the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Some of the ABA-based tools are tools for the needs of students, and others are developed for the ABA-based needs of educator and clinicians that can be found on various apps for use on the iPad. The iPads that will be purchased will be a carrier for various apps that will help to facilitate a more streamlined language process that my students can become involved in and growth with over time.
