This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students have limited exposure to fundamental academic constructs that are critical to future educational success. I would like an iPad for our room that we can load with educational apps to deeply engage our students in the world of learning and help to close the learning gap.

My students are awesome!

Many of them live in families with low-incomes and are learning English as a second language in our classroom. Preschoolers learn best through play, and I have found that technology (in moderation) can be a great way to expose my students who are not familiar with the alphabet, letter sounds or numeracy through their home environment to become deeply engaged in these academic constructs. The educational apps on the iPad support students to quickly learn some of the academic skills they need for kindergarten readiness. Located in an Illinois urban center, our school is a fantastically diverse place of learning with a supportive community of parents, educators and administrators that work together for the benefit of all our students. Our school is special because we constantly strive to change and improve our practices and environment to enrich the lives of our students and their families.

My Project

I am requesting an iPad to be used for educational purposes. My students do not generally have access to the rich educational applications available for iPads, and I have had great success using my personal iPad with students who are learning to write letters, make connections between letters and the sounds they make, and build math skills with applications such as Letter School, Endless ABC's and Montessori Math. While I would like to let them use my iPad each and every day, I need it most of the time for the purposes of assessment. I believe this gift would change my students lives by exposing them to academic constructs that they need to be ready for kindergarten in a way that is very engaging. We use many modalities to teach these academic skills in our room, and the iPad would be another way for students to reinforce this learning.

This project is so important because it will help equalize the academic experience of all my students who are going to kindergarten.
