This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are fourth graders in a low socioeconomic status area. Our school has a population of students where 94.1% are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and more than three-fourths of my students receive free or reduced lunch. In spite of their circumstances, they still come to school ready, enthusiastic, and yearning for new knowledge.

While many of my students lack resources at home, they strive to excel in the classroom.

It is not uncommon for my students to want to stay in during recess or after school to enhance their own learning. Our community rallies for and values education and is supportive of our school and our students.

My Project

My students will use the iPad for a variety of activities. In Social Studies my students will be researching the 21 California Missions. Instead of the traditional research project, I will have my students use the Garageband app to create a class podcast. Each student will create an episode that will discuss their assigned mission. Using a podcast will be a modern twist to teaching and learning about missions that are hundreds of years old.

Another use for the iPad is during workstations time.

I would have a dedicated Osmo Station where students can use games included in the Osmo Genius Kit that transform the iPad into a hands-on learning tool. The Numbers and Words puzzles turn math and spelling into educational fun. Visual and critical thinking is encouraged using the Tangram game, problem-solving is practiced in Newton, and creative drawing skills are honed using Masterpiece.

These are just some of the activities my students will use that will keep their learning moving forward.
