This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is composed of 400 students in general education classes, with students with IEPs and ELL learners.
"All of us do not have equal talent, but all of us should have an equal opportunity to develop our talents." - John F.
Kennedy
My class is in need of some important materials that will assist students with disabilities to become enticed by learning the general education curriculum.
This year our school has taken a huge budget cut. Even though we had this budget cut, it is all about the kids. We decided to have an activity day once a week after school. From survey responses, there was a vast number of students interested in cake decorating. A few teachers and I decided to form this club. We didn't realize the overhead that was involved. After having the first few sessions, we saw how the students loved this. It gave them time to take ownership and celebrate their accomplishments outside the classroom. It cannot be all academics, the students need some downtime. Some of these students don't have anything to do for leisure after school.
My Project
I am requesting 1 iPad for the classroom, headphones, keyboard, chargers. Having an iPad in the classroom will allow my students the opportunity to use apps specifically created to help develop reading and math skills. Our school uses a computer program to help with beginning reading skills. Having an iPad in the classroom would give students the opportunity to access the program throughout the day rather than waiting for their weekly computer lab time. I have seen first-hand how students can use technology in the classroom. I often bring my own laptop and iPad in for students to use. Connecting my iPad to the projector, I am able to share learning videos, music and much more with my entire class. We have recently begun to use QR Codes in our classroom; an iPad would allow us to use this type of technology even more. Having a dedicated classroom iPad would give my students the ability to access technology and multimedia all day long.
At least once a day, you will find my whole class actively engaged in reading, math and even physical education via technology.
Every day I connect my iPad or laptop to our projector to instruct my students on sight words, math skills and even Zumba.
Most of my students do not have computers, tablets or iPads. The very few that do, don't have Internet. My students are eager to learn, they LOVE school and love the 30 minutes a week we have in our computer lab. However that isn't enough time; by the time I get everyone logged on, it is time to leave.
By giving my students an early start with technology, they will be better prepared as they move through the grades with the knowledge they need to receive the full benefits computers.
