Every week, the students meet with me online to engage with literature and research. I strive to make the library a place where students can build a love of reading and learning.
Due to distance learning, teaching is more challenging than ever.
Any tools I can use to engage my students will be helpful to us all! With hundreds of students each week and only a short time with each class, I want to make the library an efficient place to teach my students.
My Project
When I'm teaching during distance learning and beyond, I want to engage my students as much as I can. I am currently using a mish-mash of devices, websites, and extensions just to make the students' distance learning experience (and my own) work.
I realized having an iPad will help me AND my students during distance learning AND when we return to school!
During distance learning, an iPad will let me see my students' faces while I'm presenting my computer screen so I can check for understanding and engagement. Using the Apple Pencil will allow me to write clearly on the Jamboard app (virtual whiteboard) and other websites. I will be able to mirror my iBooks app to share books directly with students virtually.
Once we go back to school in person, I can transition this iPad to work in the library. The iPad will serve as our Library Catalog station so that students can easily look up books they want to check out. They can even walk around with it if they need to refer to it during their book search. It will be especially helpful for my Special Needs students, who often prefer a touch-screen device over a traditional computer. I even have ideas to use iPad game time as an incentive for hard working students!
This iPad will hopefully be the first of several, helping make for a much better and more efficient teaching and learning experience during the pandemic and beyond.
