My Students

I teach at a public elementary school on the island of Maui in Hawaii. My school is a Title I school with a largely socioeconomically​ disadvantaged student population. 65% of our students participate in the free and reduced lunch program. We have a population of over 700 highly diverse students with a wide variety of backgrounds, ethnicity, abilities, and individual needs. Students speak multiple languages and 30% of our students are English Language Learners. Students benefiting from my project will range from Kindergarten through 5th graders.

My Project

With so much uncertainty in the world, Kihei Elementary will be implementing a blended learning model this year where students are learning both in class and virtually. As teachers, we will be integrating technology daily into our curriculum and creating digital lessons for all subject areas. These iPads will give all of the 2nd grade teachers the opportunity to create engaging educational experiences for all of our students. iPads will allow us to be more mobile. Our current technology requires us to stay in one place. Since we will be teaching students in person and students at home simultaneously, we need the flexibility to "carry" our virtual students around the room with us in order to better support those in the classroom. The iPads will also serve as a whiteboard we can share virtually and project in the classroom. Additionally, they can be set up as a document camera to make our pre-recorded and live teaching more engaging. Our world is becoming more technologically advanced, and dependent, by the day, and the sooner we can integrate current technology, the more opportunities our students will have for success in the future!
