My Students

Can you imagine what it would be like to be 8 years old, autistic, and nonverbal? Being unable to communicate with language must be so frustrating and degrading. An iPad can completely change all that.

I teach a group of 2nd and 3rd grade students who are autistic and nonverbal.

They are adorable, loving, and energetic. They love toys (especially from Toy Story) and playing outside on the swings. They are not an easy bunch to teach because they struggle with anxiety and frustration on a daily basis which in turn lead to difficult behaviors. Many of these frustrations stem from an inability to express themselves. When one of my little guys is hungry or thirsty, he can't tell me. If he is too hot or has a tummy ache, he can't tell me that either. Even if he is happy and is bouncing around the room, he can't explain to me what he is feeling or why.

My Project

Recently, iPods and iPads have started to change the lives of students who are autistic and nonverbal. Certain applications exist that children can learn to use to communicate. They chain together words using picture icons to create sentences to express thoughts and ideas. It's amazing! Parents and teachers have had wonderful success teaching students to use these applications on a daily basis to make requests, do schoolwork, and even describe their own feelings and emotions. Most of my students are already computer literate and I know that I could unlock the social world for them by teaching them to use the iPad as a communication tool.

Having a set of iPads would not make a small impact on the lives of my students, it could CHANGE their lives forever.

They would go from having no way to communicate to being potential conversation partners. This could be a model for other classrooms, other schools, other teachers, and other families. The impacts could be far reaching and change many lives.
