My students need a class iPad, a set of alphabet reader kits and their favorite author's book collection in order to provide them with the opportunity to expand their vocabulary.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I've had the pleasure to teach in the neighborhood that I had grown up in and currently still live in! My classroom consists of 20 preschoolers, several of whom have special needs. The majority of my students are English Language Learners with various backgrounds.
I have a diverse group of students who are curious learners and love to share their experiences.
While many of my students are new to the country, this is also their first time in a school setting. Please help me provide them with the resources and opportunities to further their experiences and expand their knowledge to help them feel and become successful.
My Project
I teach PreK in a Title 1 school in Brooklyn where my students are entering school and also learning the English language for the first time. While some students have acquired their knowledge and experiences in their home language, they still require many resources to help them learn and communicate with their peers and teachers in English.
I am requesting a class iPad, a set of alphabet reader kits and their favorite author's book collection in order to provide my students with the opportunity to expand their vocabulary.
In order to increase their vocabulary, my students will greatly benefit from an array of educational resources to meet their diverse needs. For example, my students love books! When reading books to my class, they are constantly repeating the words of the characters with me and even doing so when "reading" independently in the classroom library. Therefore, providing them with books that they can act out such as the Mo Willems collection as well as beginning reader kits would continue to nurture their love of reading and learning. Acting out books is a great way that English Language Learners are able to hear and practice new words in a fun way as well as enhance their social skills!
Another tool we use for vocabulary is educational websites, such as ABCMouse and Starfall. We have created accounts for all of our students to be able to practice and enhance their skills on ABCMouse. Although a class set of iPads would be a dream. At this time, one iPad would be helpful in providing our students with the opportunity to engage in the individualized lesson activities that I have created for them. They will each be able to spend time listening to songs, books and playing games related to the letter or vocabulary of the week. As our families also have access to their accounts, this will continue to reinforce any new skills and vocabulary taught in school. Please help me support my student's learning!
