Help me give my students access to technology which is vital for career success in this day and age. Many students do not have access to tablets, so having an iPad available for them to share is crucial.
Common Core State Standards aim to prepare students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in college and the work force. Those skills include collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking, and communication. In my classroom, we strive to meet those standards by having students participate in collaborative groups and writing workshop. The students are driven and hard-working even though they’re only six and seven years old. They’re high performing students because they love learning.
Our school is a fairly large elementary school in the heart of Willow Glen.
The students have the privilege of enjoying garden, art, and music. I’ve had the privilege of teaching young learners for nine years now, yet it never ceases to amaze me how creative and insightful even the youngest of minds can be.
My Project
Through DonorsChoose.org, my students have benefited from having two iPads that they can use in the classroom to promote literacy in the 21st century. I'm asking for one more because this will enable the students in my public classroom to work collaboratively in small groups with multiple iPads.
Students can use an iPad in the classroom to create a digital portfolio of a school year's worth of work and share it with family and friends.
They can record and take pictures of each other and themselves during writing, reading, and math time to share with their families a typical day in first grade. Students take pleasure in reading their writing, reciting poems, taking pictures of group projects, sharing book reviews, and much more. They can do ALL that and share those learnings using an iPad with an app called Seesaw. Students feel a great sense of successful and accomplishment when they can see their work on digit form. Seesaw saves all their recordings and photos, which creates a digital portfolio of their year's achievements.
Furthermore, the iPad will allow students to practice crucial foundational skills on additional apps such as Epic, Lexia, and Dreambox. These academic online tools allow students to listen to ebooks, review high frequency words, strengthen comprehension skills, practice math operations, and much more.
The students and I appreciate your support to help make learning more fun and interactive with the use of an iPad!
