Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Does NASA use an abacus? Of course they don't. And we don't start and stop our cars with our feet like Fred Flintstones either. So why should today's classroom be run using an inefficient, outmoded and unresponsive pencil.
I teach at a high poverty, Title 1 school.
My Special Needs students are in grades K-2. These are the vital years for children to develop reading skills; the skills they need for all future learning. For Special Needs students who are also English Learners this is a tremendous challenge. Our school will begin using a program to assess students' reading readiness and reading ability, measure progress and provide intervention. To get the most out of the program we need technology. We need an iPad 2.
My Project
Using an iPad 2 students can be assessed in an unobtrusive way, in real time. Progress can be seen with the tap of a finger. Reports for both home and school are generated automatically. Areas of strength and weakness are charted and recommended activities to support continued growth are available as well. Best of all, the activities can all be done on the iPad 2. Students can access hands-on, engaging and motivating applications regarding letters and their sounds, building and blending them into words and words into sentences. Students will be able to see, say and do with the iPad 2.
The iPad 2 will be a vital part of the instructional day assessing students and providing them instantly with an opportunity to practice the very skill they need to work on.
While the teacher will use the iPad 2 to conduct the assessments every few weeks the students will use it daily to practice their reading skills. We need tomorrow's leaders to become today's readers. The iPad 2 will help us get there... but only with your help
