Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a proud Title I school, where 100% of students receive free lunch and free breakfast. I have 19 of 21 students who are all English Language Learners, some speaking no English at all. My students live in one of the most dangerous parts of their urban city of Oakland, California, but overcome all obstacles. These children come to school with positive attitudes and are ready to learn when they come to school.
My students are an excited bunch who love to read and discover new words as they continue to improve their fluency skills.
I often have students who will ask to stay in the classroom at recess or come back after lunch during their free time to dive into more books. I am amazed at their will to persevere through all the hard work 5th grade is.
My Project
My students need access to more books in the classroom with a wider range of lexile scores. Students are also in need of a reading rug and bean bags to add to the classroom so they can utilize different areas of the classroom so the environment is welcoming to read.
The books chosen will bring a wider range to the classroom, as our class library is still small.
If we have a reading rug, I will be able to create a quite and inviting place where kids want to read and are excited to do so. Kids need to have access to move around the room, bean bags will allow more kids to move.
Students will also have access to take these class books home and borrow them for nightly reading. All of my students come from low income families that do not have access to buy their children books. I would like to help close this gap, and bring equity to all families to read with their children in their homes regardless of their socioeconomic status.
