My Students

My sixth grade English classroom is full of inspiring, creative, and incredible students. I teach in a school where more than a third of the students are from low-income households. However, this does not stop them from trying their best. The second they walk into my classroom, I focus on encouraging them and modeling a positive attitude.

I may not be able to control what happens outside of school, but I can do my best to make sure my students are comfortable and safe within my classroom.

My students are full of life and inspire me every day to keep learning and never quit. My goal is to work hard and provide them with amazing resources, so that I may return the favor to them.

My Project

When I know I need to focus and get down to work, I tend to gravitate toward the most comfortable place in the room. I have noticed that my students do the same, however, they don't have an option outside of their desks or the hard floor. Because of this, they end up leaning on desks, laying on the floor, or tipping backwards in their chairs. This is unsafe! When students are confined to one place for long periods of time, they lose focus, become bored, and start to partake in behaviors that are less than desirable.

My goal is to provide students with an environment that promotes student learning and engagement 100% of the time.

This means flexible seating options. It could be a bouncy ball to transmit energy to or a comfortable cushion to sit on the floor because desks can get uneasy quickly. I have chosen a large table so that I can get rid of some of my desks, bouncy ball chairs to set up at the table, some game chairs for students to use (also allows them to rock back and forth) if they are fidgety, and some cushions. The cushions are extremely needed because my kids love to lay on the floor to read! The items I have chosen to implement are what I believe will benefit my students the most. I want my students to have a place where they can be comfortable, stay focused, and utilize their creativity!
