I teach grades 6-12 Special Education. Oklahoma Legislature has passed House Bill 1476 Personal Financial Literacy Education. The intent of this bill is to inform students how individual choices directly influence occupational goals and future earnings potential. I think it is very important for special education students to understand and have basic knowledge needed to effectively manage their personal finances.
With the calculators, I can teach my special education students to use the calculators and understand their personal finances. These calculators will make it possible for the students to accomplish their goals with an investment class, instead of trying to teach math skills via pencil/paper, which is sometimes very confusing with them. We are a very high poverty level school and we do not have the funds to provide students with these calculators and the students do not have the funds to purchase them personally. Oklahoma Legislature has passed this bill requiring our students to receive instruction and they need the technology to perform these goals.
These calculators will make it possible for the students to gain basic skills and knowledge of how to manage their personal finances. The calculators will make it easier for them, because they don't all understand the steps it takes to perform the mathematical solution manually.
As donors, you will make it possible for my students to meet the goals that the Oklahoma Legislature has set forth for students and also give them the knowledge of how to use technology via calculators to manage their personal finances when they get out of school.
