Our school is 96% free or reduced-price lunch and nearly 70% are English Language learners. My students are resilient, hardworking, and motivated. They have been thrown a huge curveball in their learning journey due to Covid-19. In the fall I saw so much effort, but also witnessed the challenges they face. My students deserve all the support we can give them.
My Project
There is no sugar coating that emergency distance learning was hard last spring. My goal is to invest in my students now so that they know we care about that, that we believe in them, and that they can learn from home successfully. My students currently have iPads and we use Google Meets, Schoology and Notability while learning at home. These are all great and important tools for learning, however we often found that the background noise from a full and busy home was distracting for learning. I believe gifting noise canceling headphones to my students will encourage and support them in more effective virtual learning meetings with me and their classmates. Since my students are often engaging in math practice from their iPad, a split screen isn't always ideal for writing their multi step work. Dry erase pocket sleeves, markers, and erasers are a tool my students love to use in class and I know they will be excited to have their own set at home to do their work. If funded, I plan to deliver these materials to my upcoming students myself. It feels like a great way to socially distance meet, invest in, and welcome my students to a new school year of tackling more challenges, practicing resilience, and learning together. I will print paper such as graph paper, 3D shapes and nets, and more for students to be able to use in their dry erase pocket sleeves. When we hopefully return to in-person school or a hybrid model, these tools will remain to be useful.
