Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The use of manipulatives is a crucial component of daily instruction in my first grade classroom, especially with the diverse learning needs that are unique to the amazing students in our class family. Using math tools provides a way for the students to be engaged in the learning, while at the same time having fun. The manipulatives allow me to see exactly what they are doing, as well as provide an easy place for them to show and share their work.

In our first grade math curriculum, we look at the value of coins.

We learn how to add money and how to determine which amount of money is more. Having pretend money and other financial items that the students can use to demonstrate these concepts makes it more real to them.

Students also learn from read aloud stories featuring situations where money shows up in every day life. It allows the students to see the role that financial literacy will have in their life.

My students comes from a variety of backgrounds and many have the wonderful gift of being multilingual learners. My goal with these items is also to increase the use of vocabulary related to financial literacy for all of the students in my class.
