My students need the lab equipment to be able to to create wet slides with the deep well slides, and be able to see live specimen, and extract DNA from strawberries, using test tubes and pipettes.
The students at our school come from a variety of challenging backgrounds. The school is a part of the Department of Alternative Programs and serves the entire county. Students are placed here as a second chance after varying disciplinary actions en lieu of expulsion.
The school now serves overage 8th graders to 12 graders, so the needs have changed.
The school has recently transitioned from a middle school to a high school program. The school serves at a 100% free/reduced lunch.
My Project
Being an alternative school, we are provided with a budget that is not based on our student numbers. We may have many more students than expected, and our budget must stretch further. However, our students still deserve to have the same lab equipment as they would expect at a traditional high school.
We are a new program, and it is my intent to build a lab that will allow for hands-on learning for our students.
Our current materials allow for limited labs and learning. Our students deserve to be prepared for college or careers, therefore they need the proper equipment, even in an alternative setting.
