Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are enrolled in a 50/50 model of a Spanish dual immersion program, where 50% of the instruction is delivered in Spanish and 50% in English. I focus on math and science, delivering the curriculum in both languages. My partner teacher does language arts and social studies, and we both incorporate art and play in our lessons. We work with two sets of students, first and second graders, totaling 44 students.

Approximately 85% of our students qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program, and 56% are English language learners, designating this population as low socioeconomic level, and our school as a Title I school.

Despite low resources, my students, all of them, have and demonstrate a great potential in learning with inquisitive questions and ideas.

My Project

Considering the long-entrenched lack of diverse books, my students need to see themselves mirrored on the pages they read: scientists, engineers, mathematicians, African American and Latino heroes. We are in educational positions where we can help create a literacy world for my readers that’s a few steps closer to being equitable, diverse, and doesn’t just represent a small segment of society. Your donation will provide funds for books in Spanish.

Considering my students are in a bilingual maintenance program and given that bilingual classroom was not something I got to experience as the child of immigrants at a time when there was no legislation to support it in California, I am now incredibly passionate about spearheading the next wave of education for my community’s younger generation.

My students love the Fly Guy and Pete the Cat series. While the aforementioned stories are important to capture their interest, it is not enough to create a fantastical world that immerses them in possibilities of what they can be. Books like these include Ada Twist Scientist, Hidden Figures,…etc. But a culturally diverse bilingual library shouldn’t feel like a privilege to us. It should be one of our rights. With this grant, we take action by contributing our voices to our classroom library with books from Vashti Harrison and Lupita Nyong’o to name a few. Thank you
