As a social justice educator, my goal is to empower students of color and facilitate their engagement and learning. This means that I will recognize the essential value of every student and encourage reflection and action that challenges discriminatory practices and social problems (racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, etc.). But I need your help. My bilingual scientists and mathematicians need resources to make the common core standards fun, engaging, and hands-on. For example, you can help contribute to a positive multilingual education system by donating culturally relevant Spanish books to our classroom library. These include but are not limited to "Un día de nieve" (A day of Snow) and "The Last Stop on Market Street" both which feature minority children as the main characters. By reading, seeing, and relating characters like themselves, these books can become highly influential books for my students. Likewise we would empower women in the sciences with books like: "Ada Twist, Scientist," "Rosie Revere, Engineer"...etc. My mathematicians would also highly benefit from math games (i.e. play money, puzzles...etc.) to realize that math is fun and takes on many forms in their lives. Play money will serve as a manipulative and will facilitate their understanding when adding or subtracting units of money. My scientists will also be learning about the stages of development of plants and animals. The plastomounts will serve as a display and hands-on tool to see the sequential stages of a frog and bean plant. This will cement their understanding of what stage their bean plant is once we plant our own. By funding my project and mission, these donations will enable my diverse and vibrant students to critically analyze and eventually contribute their voices to make their learning even better. Thank you!
