Investigations That Rock Our Word!

My students need a rock tumbler & rocks to tumble, rocks to identify & label, magazines & books on rocks, a how to paint rocks guide, photo frames, and acrylic paint.

My Students

Our world rocks! Through this project my students will able to explore the many facets of rocks as they learn how rocks play an important role in our environment.

My students are excited to come to school each day and to learn from one another.

They enjoy working in collaborative groups and sharing their knowledge with each other. My students enjoy using their critical thinking skills to evaluate new information. I often integrate the arts into our lessons so that my students can make personal connections to their learning and demonstrate what they know in creative ways.

My Project

In Second Grade, we learn how cool rocks are with our Pebbles, Sand, and Silt unit. We explore rocks by finding them, washing them, examining them under a microscope, and recording their similarities and differences. I want to take this unit to the next level. We will read the requested books &magazine to open the unit. After discussing their findings in small groups, students will record their questions & observations in interactive journals. Next, students will collaborate with table groups to identify & label the rocks in the classroom collections. After learning how to identify rocks, students will pick one of their own to watch go from a jagged piece of gray to something worthy of a museum display as it travels through the tumbling process. At the conclusion of this unit, each student will use the acrylic paints to paint a canvas and make their own pet rock to take home. I will take a photo of each student with their pet rock to be placed in the frames around the classroom.

This project will help my students become 21st Century Learners by implementing a strong foundation for inquiry by providing them with opportunities to enhance their community, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity skills.
