Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Medical Interventions enables students to play the role of infectious disease experts. My scholars are now in their third year of Biomedical Science, and are learning college-level concepts in biotechnology. They are inquisitive, intelligent, and inspired to learn about the varying facets of microbiology, cancer, and genetics.
My Project
In my "How to Conquer Cancer" unit, my students investigate how DNA damage in cells ultimately leads to cancer. More specifically, they will study the impacts of direct UV light and melanomas (skin cancer). This lab enables students creative freedom to explore how different variables can shield the skin from the harmful UVA and UVB rays emitted from the sun.
When students begin the lab, they will generate a hypothesis on protective elements against the UV rays emitted by the sun.
This can be what color clothing best protects the sun or which SPF sunscreen is the most effective in conferring the best protection. When they expose a mutated, non-pathogenic yeast to the sun, using the experimental parameters they set, they can test their hypotheses out firsthand and report on the results of their experiment.
What I love about this lab is that it gives students agency in exploring the scientific method in a tangible way that they can take home to their friends and family, while educating them on the importance of protecting oneself against the sun and melanomas.
